本作の主人公で、リンドブルムの劇団兼盗賊団「タンタラス」の団員です。尻尾を持ったジェノムという特殊な種族です。アレクサンドリアの王女ガーネットに一目惚れしたことからタンタラスを脱退し、ガーネットと旅をすることになります。ジェノムとは、惑星テラの住民の器として作られた人形のような存在でしたが、ジタンの正体は惑星テラの支配者ガーランドによって生成された最強のジェノムです。敵として対峙するクジャは、ジタンの兄にあたります。

クジャの持つ技術により霧から生成された黒魔導士で、戦争に利用されていた人造兵器です。初期段階で作られたため、他の黒魔導士よりも長い活動時間を得ていたことで自我が目覚めます。旅の中で自身の出生について知ることで深く悩みますが、最終的にはそれを受け入れて克服していきます。最終戦闘の後は黒魔道士の村で過ごし、活動停止してしまいますが、ジェノム達が伝えたテラのクローン技術により、自分のクローンである子供を複数体残しています。

Zidane is a member of the travelling theater troupe and band of theives, 'Tantalus,' and the main protagonist of Final Fantasy IX. He is a member of the tailed Genome race. After falling in love at first sight with Garnet, the Princess of Alexandria, Zidane trades life with Tantalus to go on a journey with Garnet. He discovers that Genomes were created to be doll-like vessels of the citizens of the planet Terra, and Zidane was the strongest created by Terra's ruler, Garland. Zidane's nemesis, Kuja, is revealed to be his brother.

Vivi Ornitier

Vivi is a Black Mage and like the rest of the Black Mages was created with Mist by Kuja as a weapon of war. He was created as an initial prototype, and so had longer to became self-aware than the others. Vivi struggles with his origins, though by the time the journey ends he has come to accept it. After the final battle he goes to live in Black Mage Village, and with the clone technology provided by the Genomes, is able to produce many clone children.
